Simplifying Funding Access Using the Principle of Metaphors (Mental Models)

Overview

I contributed as the Product Designer for the next-generation interactive version (v2) of Unbox’s grant management platform, used in the Indiana 5G Zone project in collaboration with NineTwelve and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

Through the integration of Ucoin, a programmable digital value carrier, we enabled:

  1. 100% fund traceability, ensuring all money remained within Indiana

  2. Elimination of slippage and misuse, as Ucoins are non-tradable and purpose-bound

  3. Automated reporting, significantly reducing administrative costs and time

This project marked the first inter-organisational deployment of Unbox software for public grant distribution, setting a new standard for transparent and efficient funding management.

We adapt this pattern into our design flow, meaning my design direction is based on Mental Model Alignment. A principle states that digital experiences should mirror real-world processes to match users’ expectations. If people are used to submitting proposals in a certain way in the real world, the digital experience should replicate that structure to feel intuitive and familiar.

I designed the interface of a tablet-based clinic app used by staff at private GP clinics. My approach centred on user empathy, ensuring that clinic staff could operate the app under busy, real-world conditions. I prioritised: Large, accessible buttons for quick actions (e.g. “Start Consultation”, “Rejoin Queue”) to reduce cognitive load and speed up workflows. A stage-based layout, aligning each section (Doctors, Upcoming Queues, Missed Queues, and Checkout) with the natural flow of the patient journey, from waiting to consultation to billing. Visual hierarchy and colour coding to allow instant recognition of patient status and next steps, minimising clicks and decision fatigue. This clear and structured design helps staff view and manage high volumes of patient data at a glance while supporting real-time updates and queue transitions seamlessly.
